Having a healthy smile means more than cleaning your teeth. Our gums are just as important as our teeth as they hold our teeth in place, so we can’t neglect them. If we don’t care for our gums, we can develop gum disease and other oral health issues. Our dentists in Castle Rock can help you prevent and control gum disease so you can enjoy a healthy, comfortable smile.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is the inflammation or infection of gum tissue and can cause infections of the gums, ligaments, and bones in the mouth. Gum disease is typically caused by poor oral hygiene habits that allow plaque to accumulate and harden on the teeth and around the gumline. Untreated or uncontrolled gum disease can lead to oral and general health issues like tooth loss, jawbone loss, heart disease, stroke, and more. With proper oral hygiene and professional dental care, you can prevent or control gum disease and maintain a healthy smile.

Gum Disease Treatments

Periodontal (gum) disease has many stages, from mild to moderate to severe, with the potential for complete tooth loss. The type of gum disease you have determines the kind of treatment your dentist will prescribe. Some treatments include deep cleanings, antibiotics, surgery, and extractions.

At Oakwood Dental, we offer non-surgical treatment of gum disease in the form of deep cleanings like full mouth debridement, scaling, and root planing. We also provide guidance and techniques to use at home so you can care for your gums in between dental appointments.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

Good Oral Hygiene

You can prevent gingivitis and gum disease by practicing good oral hygiene. Thoroughly but gently brush twice daily for at least two minutes each time, and floss once daily to remove plaque and bacteria from the gums. Flossing also stimulates and massages the gums, which helps keep them firm.

Routine Dental Visits

We recommend visiting your dentist for professional teeth cleanings every six months. We recommend more frequent cleanings if you have gingivitis or gum disease or are at risk for these conditions. People with higher chances usually include those with dry mouth, certain medical conditions, and smokers.

During routine visits, we can check your mouth for any signs of developing gum disease so we can treat it immediately. Regular teeth cleanings also remove plaque and tartar your toothbrush and floss can’t reach.
