Frequently Asked Questions

close up of woman getting dental exam at castle rockFluoride is a mineral that naturally occurs in water and in many foods. Fluoride treatments are administered by the dentist to help prevent decay. At Oakwood Dental, we recommend topical fluoride treatments for both children and adults. Fluoride helps strengthen the tooth enamel, which is the hard coating on your teeth. Fluoride works with the saliva to help protect the enamel from plaque and “sugar bugs.”

How Flouride Helps Your Teeth

The loss of enamel, or demineralization, eventually causes cavities. Remineralization occurs when fluoride, calcium, and phosphate minerals are deposited back into the enamel. This helps keep your enamel strong, safer from decay, and more resistant to acid attacks from sugars and plaque bacteria in the mouth. When fluoride is administered to children age 6 and under, it is integrated into the growth of the permanent teeth. This makes it difficult for acids to demineralize the teeth. Fluoride also helps disrupt any acid production in teeth that have already erupted in both children and adults.

It is considered safe because it has a rapid onset that is easily reversible, it is non-allergenic, and can be adjusted in various concentrations. Nitrous Oxide is a colorless and odorless gas that is also used in hospitals, and outpatient and inpatient settings. During the procedure, the patient can still hear, see and respond to their surroundings. Nitrous Oxide is also commonly known as laughing gas because patients can sometimes begin to feel giddy or ecstatic while breathing the gas, causing them to laugh or giggle.

alarm clock sitting on tableAt Oakwood Dental, we strive to provide excellent dental care to all of our patients. Our goal is to create a schedule that most efficiently provides for the dental needs of all of the patients we serve. We pride ourselves in providing time for the personal attention each patient deserves, and make every effort to keep you from waiting. As a result, your appointment time in this office is reserved exclusively for you.

How to Reschedule An Appointment

We require that you give our office at least a 24-hour notice in the event that you need to reschedule your appointment. Our policy helps us be available for those patients who may have a dental emergency.  If you miss an appointment without contacting our office within the required time, this is considered a “no show” or a missed appointment. “No Shows” inconvenience other patients who need access to dental care in a timely manner. Last minute/late cancellations are considered a “no-show” appointment and a fee of $50 per hour scheduled may be charged to you. This fee cannot be billed to your insurance company and will be your direct responsibility.

Late Arrivals

If a patient is more than 15 minutes late without notice for a scheduled appointment, please be aware that the appointment may need to be rescheduled. Late arrivals cause schedule delays for those patients who arrive promptly at their appointment time. Late arrivals will be worked into the schedule if time allows or re-appointed to another day. Our office will consider a late arrival or a missed appointment on a case by case scenario, and the cancellation fee may be charged.

root canal diagram A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy, is necessary when the pulp, or nerve, inside the tooth, become infected, inflamed or irreversibly damaged. It is a treatment done to repair and attempt to save a tooth. Root canal treatment is initiated to remove the entire pulp and nerve throughout the root canal system. The goal is to clean and shape the canal system, then fill and seal the canals with a synthetic root canal filling called Gutta Percha. The tooth is then completed with a permanent restoration. Without proper treatment on an infected or decayed tooth, the tissue surrounding the tooth can become infected as well, causing an abscess. An abscess is commonly described as an area with painful swelling and sometimes filled with pus. If the pus is not drained, the infected area with become more swollen and more painful. An abscess will not go away on its own, so it is important not to ignore any symptoms and risk the infection spreading and causing serious health problems.
