You might be familiar with the terms “BOTOX®” and “Juvéderm®,” but do you really know what they are? Both botulinum toxin and dermal fillers are injectables that can help diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, but they each work in very different ways. In this article, we’ll give you a breakdown of how Botox and Juvedérm work, as well as their fundamental differences.

How BOTOX Works

BOTOX is made from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin. When injected into the muscles, it temporarily blocks nerve signals, causing the muscles to relax. This reduction in muscle activity can help to soften wrinkles and fine lines. BOTOX is most commonly injected into the forehead, lines around the eyes, and brow area. It typically takes anywhere from 3 to 14 days to see results, which can last for up to 4 months.

How Juvéderm Works

Unlike BOTOX, which works by temporarily relaxing muscles, Juvéderm is a dermal filler that replenishes lost volume in the skin. It contains hyaluronic acid (a substance that’s naturally found in our skin), which attracts and retains moisture, giving the skin a more hydrated and plump appearance. Juvéderm is most commonly injected into the cheeks, nasolabial folds (lines from your nose to your mouth), marionette lines (lines around the corners of your mouth), and lips. Results are immediate and can last up to one year with optimal treatment.

Is There Any Downtime?

Both BOTOX and Juvéderm are minimally-invasive procedures, so there is very little downtime involved. You may have some redness and swelling at the injection site immediately after treatment, but this should go away within a few hours.

The Bottom Line: BOTOX vs. Juvéderm

When it comes down to it, BOTOX and Juvéderm are two very different types of injectables. BOTOX works by temporarily paralyzing muscles to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, while Juvéderm replenishes lost volume by plumping the skin for a more youthful appearance. So, which one is right for you? The answer depends on your unique concerns and goals.
