Brushing and flossing our teeth is important to our overall oral health and wellness. However, the brushing technique we use can make a world of difference. At Oakwood Dental, your dentists in Castle Rock are here to ensure your child’s smile stays healthy and clean. Here are some tips for making the most out of your child’s oral hygiene routine at home.

Tip #1 Brush for the appropriate amount of time.

Many people ask us, “How long should you brush your teeth?” We recommend that you or your child gently brush their teeth in small circular motions at a 45-degree angle for two to three minutes. Brushing too quickly is common but try to take your time, so you remove as much plaque as possible. Also, be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush because brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled brush can damage enamel.

Tip #2 Gently brush twice daily.

Do you ever wonder, “How many times a day should my child brush their teeth?” Plaque can collect on the teeth in just eight hours, so we recommend that your child brush their teeth twice every day: once in the morning and once at night before bed.

Tip #3 Consistency is key.

Brushing your child’s teeth is integral to their oral health. Dental problems can be painful and costly, but maintaining excellent oral hygiene can help them avoid many concerns, such as tooth decay and gum disease. It’s important to stay consistent on a brushing and flossing routine so your little one can enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile for many years to come.

Tip #4 Schedule routine dental cleanings.

Brushing and flossing remove bacteria that make up plaque, but you can only do so much at home. That’s why routine dental cleanings are so important. During your professional teeth cleaning, the hygienist thoroughly and safely removes plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth. We agree with the American Dental Association about having these routine visits every six months. Patients with gum disease may need more request appointments for periodontal maintenance.
