Dr. Jones knows the importance of giving back. In 2016, he began volunteering with Global Dental Relief to provide much needed dental care to Guatemalan children. Sharing his dental knowledge and skills has been very fulfilling way to give back to those that are less fortunate.
There is a significant need for dental treatment and education in Guatemala due to the poverty, lack of resources and poor dental education. In 2016, Dr. Jones volunteered with Global Dental Relief, in San Martin Jilotepeque, Guatemala. He was part of a team consisting of 5 dentists, 2 hygienists that treated 723 patients. They provided the U.S. equivalent $185,040 worth of dental treatment in 6 days. Many smiles were preserved by placing fillings, extracting infected teeth, performing cleanings and most importantly educating children on the importance of proper care of their teeth.
The projects that Global Dental Relief supports require volunteers that are both dental professionals and non-dental professionals. In July 2018, Dr. Brandt Jones returned to San Martin Jilotepeque with his13-year-old son, Tanner, to help as a volunteer. Tanner was able to connect with children and take part in their dental education, administer fluoride and be an overall help to the clinic. Tanner thought the experience was amazing and it was a real eye-opener to see how the children his own age live in a developing country. On this trip, they had a team of 5 dentists, and 1 hygienist and treated 611 patients, providing the U.S. equivalent of $160,040 worth of dental treatment in 6 days.
Dr. Jones feels that volunteering really helps him gain perspective and highly recommends volunteering to anyone with an interest. He appreciates every opportunity to help the underserved and realizes that none of it would be possible without the support of his amazing dental team and patients at Oakwood Dental.
