Frequently Asked Questions

man in dental chair | castle rock co dentistWith good oral hygiene habits and a normally healthy mouth, Dr. Jones typically suggests a professional cleaning, or a prophylaxis, by one of our exceptional hygienists at least twice a year. The goal of regular dental cleanings is to remove plaque, tarter, and any stains that may have accumulated on the teeth, as wells as to prevent and treat gum disease. Even with the best at-home oral hygiene habits, tarter and plaque can still develop.

Deeper Dental Cleaning

Sometimes it is necessary to do a “deeper” cleaning, known as scaling and root planing. A regular prohylaxis focuses on the surface and in between the teeth, and stays above the gum line. A scaling and root planning cleaning is needed in order to remove any bacteria and calculus that may have collected under the gum line and on the surface of the roots of your teeth. This deeper cleaning is the best way to treat gum disease and helps prevent bone loss, which can loosen the teeth and causing them to become mobile.

dental clinic in castle rock coFluoride is a mineral that naturally occurs in water and in many foods. Fluoride treatments are administered by the dentist to help prevent decay. At Oakwood Dental, we recommend topical fluoride treatments for both children and adults. Fluoride helps strengthen the tooth enamel, which is the hard coating on your teeth. Fluoride works with the saliva to help protect the enamel from plaque and “sugar bugs.”

How Flouride Helps Your Teeth

The loss of enamel, or demineralization, eventually causes cavities. Remineralization occurs when fluoride, calcium, and phosphate minerals are deposited back into the enamel. This helps keep your enamel strong, safer from decay, and more resistant to acid attacks from sugars and plaque bacteria in the mouth. When fluoride is administered to children age 6 and under, it is integrated into the growth of the permanent teeth. This makes it difficult for acids to demineralize the teeth. Fluoride also helps disrupt any acid production in teeth that have already erupted in both children and adults.

Woman smiling in dental chair | Dentist Castle Rock coNitrous Oxide is a very gentle pharmacological agent commonly used in dentistry to help a patient relax during treatment.  Nitrous Oxide is considered a safe sedative for many reasons. It is considered safe because it has a rapid onset that is easily reversible, it is non-allergenic, and can be adjusted in various concentrations. Nitrous Oxide is a colorless and odorless gas that is also used in hospitals, and outpatient and inpatient settings. During the procedure, the patient can still hear, see and respond to their surroundings. Nitrous Oxide is also commonly known as laughing gas because patients can sometimes begin to feel giddy or ecstatic while breathing the gas, causing them to laugh or giggle.

child smiling | Castle rock children's dentistryA sealant is a thin, plastic coating that is painted on to the chewing surface of a tooth. It is most common for sealants to be placed on permanent molars and premolars (back teeth) to prevent decay. Sealants are a protective shield over the enamel that quickly bonds to the grooves of the tooth.

Importance of Sealants

Sealants are highly recommended for children and teenagers to help prevent any decay throughout their most cavity-prone years of ages 6 through 14. In some cases, it is recommended to place sealants on baby teeth as well if they have deep depressions or grooves. It is important to take care of the baby teeth because they play such an important role in the correct spacing of the permanent teeth, so it is beneficial to avoid losing baby teeth too early due to preventable decay. While flossing and brushing can remove plaque and food from the smooth surfaces of the teeth, it is harder to get into all of the nooks and crannies. Especially on those back teeth. That is where sealants come in handy to help protect those more vulnerable areas by “sealing out” food and plaque.

Sealant Process in 80104

The application of sealants is a quick and painless procedure. Sealants can help protect teeth from decay for up to 10 years, but they do need to be checked regularly by your dentist or hygienist for chipping or normal wearing. Luckily, sealants can be replaced as often as necessary, if needed. Most insurance companies cover the cost of sealants up to a certain age limit, which can vary with each plan. At Oakwood Dental, we are happy to verify your benefits for you to see what coverage you have.

alarm clock | Castle rock co dentistAt Oakwood Dental, we strive to provide excellent dental care to all of our patients. Our goal is to create a schedule that most efficiently provides for the dental needs of all of the patients we serve. We pride ourselves in providing time for the personal attention each patient deserves, and make every effort to keep you from waiting. As a result, your appointment time in this office is reserved exclusively for you.

How to Reschedule An Appointment

We require that you give our office at least a 24-hour notice in the event that you need to reschedule your appointment. Our policy helps us be available for those patients who may have a dental emergency.  If you miss an appointment without contacting our office within the required time, this is considered a “no show” or a missed appointment. “No Shows” inconvenience other patients who need access to dental care in a timely manner. Last minute/late cancellations are considered a “no-show” appointment and a fee of $50 per hour scheduled may be charged to you. This fee cannot be billed to your insurance company and will be your direct responsibility.

Late Arrivals

If a patient is more than 15 minutes late without notice for a scheduled appointment, please be aware that the appointment may need to be rescheduled. Late arrivals cause schedule delays for those patients who arrive promptly at their appointment time. Late arrivals will be worked into the schedule if time allows or re-appointed to another day. Our office will consider a late arrival or a missed appointment on a case by case scenario, and the cancellation fee may be charged.
